A Unique Approach to KAP

The ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) program at Asheville Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Center for Inner Healing is uniquely designed for folks with complex PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, OCD, anxiety, and attachment trauma.

Our perspective is that no compound is a “magic pill” and substances alone do not lead to lasting change. All healing is relational, just as all wounding is relational. The therapeutic relationship creates a foundation for our process, a secure base to rest in and to explore from. Opportunities to explore the inner landscape before ingestion of psychedelic compounds set a framework for our journeys so that we are in collaboration with the inner healer. At CIH we strive to balance active participation in our healing with learning to let go and trust the unfolding process.

We require that all KAP clients first participate in biweekly integrative therapy sessions that may include hypnotherapy, internal family systems therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and/or movement and somatic psychotherapy. These sessions prepare clients to enter the non-ordinary state and to integrate the new learning that these states can catalyze.

When we hit a “block” in the process of integrative psychotherapy (a belief or feeling that seems immovable), we then incorporate the medicine, which can help facilitate a softening or a shift in perspective.

We believe integration is even more important than the medicine, so we space out the dosing (also known as the ceremonies) to create more time and space for new ideas, habits, and behaviors to take hold in daily life. Your therapist and psychiatrist will work together to determine the frequency of sessions— typically monthly.

FAQs

  • If you have a good relationship with a current therapist or healer, we want to involve that practitioner in your treatment. We will request a release of information as we believe in strong care coordination. We recommend that you see your current provider on the weeks that you do not meet with your KAP therapist. The preparation phase may be slightly truncated for some clients who are regularly working with a therapist.

  • For clients seeking a shorter process, group KAP may be a better option.

  • If you have out-of-network benefits, you may be able to submit a superbill to your insurance for reimbursement. We can provide you with a superbill but we cannot guarantee reimbursement and payment will still be expected even if the claim is unpaid by insurance.
