Is psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy right for me?

Are you…

  • Struggling with depression, sadness or lack of meaning/purpose

  • Feeling burnt out, lacking direction, or just plain stuck

  • Exhausted with psychiatric treatments or therapies that have been unsuccessful

  • Desiring a time out from your ordinary mind and a broadened perspective

  • Longing for a mental, physical and spiritual transformation

  • Struggling to make lasting changes

  • Seeking community and connection

  • Interested in using psychedelic medicines to rediscover well being

  • Ready for a supportive, immersive psychedelic experience with trained providers to catalyze your healing journey

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is not for everyone. You should not participate in PAP if you are pregnant, have a psychotic disorder, have uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart/liver disease.

Appropriateness of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) for individual clients will be determined by Asheville Psychedelic Therapy staff and our partner psychiatrist during your medical evaluation.

The 3 Phases of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy

  • We encourage participants to prepare for the retreat by clarifying their intentions and desires for participating. This may involve processes like journaling, meditation or other contemplative practices or embodiment practices such as yoga or dance. We will discuss a preparation plan tailored to fit your needs during your individual preparation sessions.

During preparation sessions, participants discuss their goals and intentions for working with ketamine. They may choose to discuss their previous work with ketamine or other psychedelic substances or non-substance-induced altered states, either recreational or therapeutic (or both).

We will invite conversation about expectations, desires, anxieties and fears about the dosing session. Facilitators will also provide information about the ketamine experience and answer questions about the process.

Additional individual preparation sessions may be requested as needed.

  • Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy sessions are often referred to as “journeys” or “ceremonies.” The dosing sessions will include intention setting, mindfulness exercise, co-creating a sacred space, an inward-facing ketamine journey, and some processing.

  • Dosing sessions will be followed by integration sessions in which participants can process insights from the journey, make meaning of their experience and –most importantly– strategize about how to build practices in their life that will support these insights.

Participants will be encouraged to maintain these practices in between retreats or sessions as a means of preparing for and integrating the experiences from the medicine work. Both research and anecdotal evidence demonstrate that engagement in these practices will create better outcomes. Our complimentary monthly integration groups serve as both a supportive community and provide a level of accountability to follow through on commitments to integration.

FAQs

  • All a la carte sessions are billed at $200 per therapy hour. Two-night retreats are typically around $2,000 plus accommodations. Credit card payments will incur an additional fee and Zelle is preferred.

  • I am an out-of-network provider, so I do not participate directly with insurance panels. I find they limit therapeutic options, collect client information I consider extremely sensitive, and require me to spend substantial time filing claims and making phone calls. Additionally, health insurance companies typically do not cover ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.

I am happy to supply you with a monthly superbill (a type of receipt) to submit for out-of-network coverage. Please check with your insurance company in advance by asking the following when you call the number on the back of your insurance card:

-What percentage is reimbursed for each out-of-network psychotherapy session? (CPT billing code 90837)

-Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per calendar year?

-Do I need to meet a deductible before I can receive reimbursement?

-Do I need preauthorization for psychotherapy or a referral from my primary care physician?

A note about insurance: Documentation sent to health insurance companies becomes part of an individual’s permanent record. Some people do not want a mental health diagnosis on their record. You can check with your insurance carrier whether you can use your health savings or flexible spending account without providing such information. If needed, I can generate a superbill minus the diagnostic code.

  • The first step is to submit a request (click here) to explore schedule and availability. You will be scheduled for a ketamine screening with our partner prescriber, followed by an hour-long preparation session with a psychotherapist to explore your background, expectations, goals, risks and protocols for this treatment.

Our partner psychiatrist will determine whether ketamine is appropriate for your condition and will then recommend a specific dosing strategy based on your treatment goals and psychiatric history. There are some exclusions to ketamine treatment: pregnancy, uncontrolled high blood pressure, cardiac disease and recent stroke among other things.

Following clearance, you will be scheduled with a psychotherapist for the ketamine sessions, either individual or group format, based on your preferences.

Typically, there is an additional 60-minute preparation session to further explore Intentions and preferences and get comfortable with your ketamine-assisted therapist prior to the guided medicine journey.

In our experience, 6-8 dosing sessions are ideal to address most mental health goals. Following each medicine journey, integration sessions are essential to build on the medicine work and create plans for long term change and growth.

  • While we cannot guarantee what sort of experience you will have during the ketamine session, some people do have challenging experiences. We will be present to support you through the dosing session. Even though the experience may be challenging, it may also bring to light important issues to address during integration.

  • For those who wish to continue working after the group is over, we will work with you to ensure that you are connected to another psychotherapist who is trained in ketamine to work with you individually.

  • There is no prerequisite to be in therapy to receive services, however, we require all participants to be connected with some mental health resources that they can access for support after the completion of services. This can include an individual therapist, group therapy, psychiatrist, coach, etc. who will provide ongoing clinical support. We will offer referral resources for people who are interested in additional treatment options.

  • If determined appropriate for treatment, up to 3 people may book a private retreat together. We will evaluate friends or relatives who wish to join a group retreat together on a case-by-case basis. While this may work, issues may arise in group cohesion and we may ask friends or relatives to separate.

  • You might be a fit for the group if you are working through depression, addiction, anxiety, PTSD and other clinical diagnoses. Some people may require a higher level of care, and during the individual preparation session, we will determine whether we are able to accommodate you at Asheville Psychedelic Psychotherapy.
